Don’t should on yourself

“Don’t SHOULD all over yourself” is one of my favorite reminders to share in the counseling room. The word ”should” is often associated with shame and contributes to much of our negative self-talk. Instead, practice replacing “should” with “could” so that your attention is directed toward possibilities. For example…

• What COULD I have done differently?

• How COULD I be more productive, compassionate, etc. today?

• In what areas COULD I prepare for the future?

Moving away from being motivated by fear and more towards freedom begins with the habits in our heads. Instead of chasing ideals, explore possibilities.
